Stephanie Says… ALS Ice Bucket Challenge
On August 11th I was nominated by a good friend of mine to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and I happily accepted. Now, I don’t know about you guys but this challenge has BLOWN UP in the States. Former President George W. Bush, David Beckham, Adam Sandler, Mark Wahlberg and many more have done the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge!
When I first heard about this challenge I have no idea what “ALS” is or “Lou Gehrig’s Disease” so I did some homework. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
At first, I did not like the idea of throwing a freezing cold bucket of ice water over my head but after learning about this horrible disease, I didn’t mind. This challenge has gotten so big in the states it is truly amazing how a small challenge has brought awareness to the world. I wish we could do something like this for every disease out there. As of August 21th, according to the ALS Association (www.alsa.org) this challenge alone raised $41.8M. Last year the organization only raised about $2M. What an amazing difference!
This is how the challenge works… when you get nominated and do the challenge; you nominate three people to complete the challenge within 24 hours. Failure to complete the challenge they must donate at least $5 (in this case 5 pounds since most of my followers are from the UK). If you donate, you must post the donation email on Facebook.

LOL you dodger you WBFF! Mine didn’t have ice in it but Mummy Smith saw to it that it was very cold tap water.
