Stephanie Says… Holiday Weight

It is Halloween season so that means it is the start of all the holidays.  Some people might think this post is too early because it is not the “holiday season” we are all thinking of but let’s think about it.  What do we buy for Halloween?  Candy! What do we do when we see a bowl of candy just chillin’ out in the open?  We eat it!! Same concept happens for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years.  We slave all day in the kitchen for our guests and at the end of the day we just want to devoir the food you just made.  Totally understandable.  That is where the holiday weight comes in and I am going to share some of the tips I do.  The NY Times did an article called “The Skinny on Holiday Weight Gain” and according to the article the average person gains about five pounds (or more) this time of year.  I know what you’re thinking “five pounds isn’t a lot” but think about the amount of effort you need to put in to lose those annoying five pounds.  They never come off as easy as we think they do.  Thanksgiving Eve and Thanksgiving are my favorite holidays.  Thanksgiving Eve you just get blasted!  Then on Thanksgiving you get ready, chill with family, and then your hangover thanks you for the amazing, delicious food!  Best 24 hours ever! Here are my tips on how to keep those aggravating five pounds off.

  1. Water! Generally, people do not drink the amount of water they are supposed to consume in a day. We are supposed to have about 8 glasses of water per day or 64oz.  Drinking water also helps you feel full.  Have a glass before you sit down for your next meal and see how much you don’t eat!  I like to load up on water the day before a big meal.  Plus water is really good for your skin!  Helps with wrinkles, ladies!
  2. Splurge. We can’t always be good when it comes to eatting right. Candy bars, Thanksgiving pies, holiday cookies are all around us.  We only live once so have that piece of pie.  Do not deny yourself because once you do, you actually set your goal back.  Just be aware of the amount you are eating!
  3. Count to 10*. Studies suggest that the average craving lasts only about 10 minutes. So before caving in to your urge, set your mental timer for a 10-minute time-out. Use the time to tackle an item on your to-do list; choose one that will give you a sense of accomplishment — and get you out of the kitchen. If I still want it after the 10 minutes, I plan on having it.  (Source* Read more: http://www.rd.com/health/diet-weight-loss/20-ways-to-lose-weight-after-the-holidays/#ixzz3HX91PzmV)
  4. Up your protein. Protein makes you feel fuller, longer. On Thanksgiving grab a tiny extra slice of turkey and eat your protein first.  You will feel satisfied!
  5. Snacking. If you plan on making a dish, for example, spinach and artichoke dip instead of using sour cream why not substitute it for plain Greek yogurt. You won’t be able to tell the difference.  Plain Greek yogurt can be used a lot of different way like a dipping sauce, in cheesecake, etc.  When you are snacking you can feel good in what you are putting in your body.  I also like to load up on the veggie platter.  You burn calories when you eat celery and other vegetables! That’s a double win!

In addition to my five tips don’t forget to up your activity level whether it is playing with little ones (kids, cousins, nieces, nephews), parking in the last parking spot in the lot, playing Wii or Xbox Kinect, or take the stairs instead of the elevator.  Those sound super easy!

I hope you all enjoy you Halloween and welcome to the holiday season!

As always, thank you for reading Stephanie Says.
