Retro Floral Nails (starring Mummy Smith)

Disclaimer: Water decals were sent to me for honest review by Born Pretty Store.

Today we have Mummy Smith’s nails on the blog – I am not sure if I have mentioned but every Saturday night I do her nails for the week. This week I went all out with my decor and think the design came together well in this retro floral combo. Mum doesn’t like me filing her nails and is very hard on her hands (I don’t do washing up… I know… I know… I am an awful 25 year old) so I didn’t fuss her and just got on with decorating. It does remind me though that not everyone is obsessed with the latest cuticle oil, constant crystal filing etc and also of a very important point: YOUR nails, YOUR rules. So as awful as we find the “do you really need more polish?” questions I am sure non-nail girls don’t appreciate the “your cuticles really need some moisturising”. I see negative comments about nail shapes and styles all the time but at the end of the day it is that persons hands and therefore their business. I don’t know, I just want to encourage the positivity in our community and not the negativity. Encourage, support, love. I have to say I have some of the best nail friends ever – it’s ok to be jealous 😉

RetroFloral

Lots of elements going on here but really this manicure started with the decals. Mum loves water decals because they wear so well on her nails and I have had these sat in my drawers waiting to be reviewed for a little while. I really loved the colours in them and tried to find a complementary shade – I picked out OPI Casino Royal which is a stunning wine colour from the Skyfall collection not that long ago.

RetroFloral2

I cut out rectangles of the design, removed the plastic covering and soaked them in water for about 30 seconds and applied them over the top of Barrym White. I cut off any excess and then used nail polish remover to tidy up the edges then topcoated in place. As with the last decals I tried from BPS these were really easy to use and manipulate on the nails – not too thick or thin, nice colouring and easy to tidy up. The decals can be found HERE and don’t forget you can use XPG10 for 10% off of full price items.

On the other nails I stamped dots from MoYou Pro XL 01 in Konad White and this flourish design from Pro 03. I wanted to tie the darker nails to the lightness of the floral. There is something really retro and fun about these and Mum was really pleased.

I think it’s super cute that you have mani time once a week! Love the manicure.

Thank you! Sometimes I can only manage to get a plain colour on her but it’s nice to do nail art every now and again.

I love this! I think it is so cool that you are able to do this with your mom once a week! I love that water decal, it’s so pretty!

I love the decals too and I’ve had them waiting to be use for so long – I hate wasting things I am sent to review just for the sake of reviewing them, does that make sense? Was nice to use them to create a nice mani for mum.

Casino Royal is a color my mom would love. I do her nails sometimes 🙂

😀 Casino Royale is gorgeous, I adore the SKyfall collection in general though so any excuse to use it! My mum is really into purple but I’m not, so it gives some of my lesser used polishes an outing.

She is good training for a client because some weeks she has no ideas what she wants, others she has very fixed ideas of how things should look. We always have fun though.

The decal is really pretty. My mom asks me every week to do her nails, I’ve only done it once, I feel really weird working on other people’s hands.

I have to say I used to find it really hard to do her nails because I was so used to just doing mine and I used to get really frustrated when the stamping didn’t turn out right cause it felt like extra pressure. Think I’ve gotten the hang of it now though.. just about.

I love the combo here! It’s so different but flows together really well!

Thank you! They work better in real life than in the photos I think, but I like to try and mix and match nails (sometimes it works better than others!).

Thank you Tamara – I love that damask too. I used it before for a pink mani for a MoYou competition. I really need to use it more.

These are just so cute! And I know I drive people crazy with the “HERE’S SOME LOTION FRIGGIN’ USE IT” that I do. But it is for their own good and some people don’t know any better…

Such a gorgeous mani. It is so nice that you do a mani every week for her. I totally agree on filing the nails part, its ones individual choice and we should respect it.

I find it difficult it challenging to do others nails. Its usually a fail when i try it on others 🙂

I have to think about what I am doing on her nails this weekend although this mani has lasted incredibly well with just some minor tipwear :O Normally by now we have whole chunks of mani missing.
I find it challenging too and I feel this pressure to be amazing, luckily Mum knows me well and just lets me get on with it and puts up with the huffing if it goes wrong.

That turned out great! It is my fantasy to have someone whose nails I could do like this but none of my friends seem interested!

I think this is bold (in a good way) to pair the damask with the floral. Gorgeous!!

Thank you! I am a bit obsessed with double accents at the moment but wasn’t sure what I was going to put with the floral – I didn’t really want to add too many more elements but glad the damask worked out!

Love it! My mom lets me do her nails too sometimes. She’s finally stopped fighting me on the bold colors lol. Love what you did with her nails!

I almost managed to get yellow on my Mum’s nails a couple of weeks ago, but she pulled a face so I changed the plan. She is totally into stamping though so I slip a bit of crazy in via the patterns. Would love to see your Mom’s manis some time!!

Awww sometimes Mum does take some persuasion if she’s particularly tired or stressed but her friends know I do her nails so they always check them out the next week, need to keep those nails looking pretty!

I really like the vintage feel of this mani, but what I really enjoyed is your write up!

First of all, how fun and what excellent practice, doing your mum’s nails every week! Awesome. Mine (when I’m home from uni) doesn’t allow any patterns or nail art, but I paint her a solid colour when she wants : ) Not even close to every week though.

Also, I’ve been thinking about it lately, because I did my friend’s nails (the doctor-to-be, I posted her nails once, and last week I did her nails for the second time : )) and I depotted some Lemony Flutterfor her and told her to use it. And she didn’t know what a cuticle oil, or cuticle bitter even was. It reminded me that we’re in this little niche and other people have OTHER obsessions, you know what I mean?
When I get a chance to do somebody’s nails I Try to NEVER comment on the cuticles/shape-whatever.

    Your nails, your business.

And I suppose, for example for a beauty, makeup blogger, me never using primer, consciously, mast be cringeworthy, just like for me her never using a top coat. (Can you imagine btw?)

    RANT OVER.

AMEN! Thank you for taking the time to write that – I really appreciate it. It is easy to forget about the bubble when it’s all over your social media but you’re totally right. I mean, I personally hate duck feet nails but I would never say that to anyone even through the anonymity of the web – it’s just impolite. I mean, there is no harm in giving advice – it’s all about HOW and WHEN. So sweet of you to decant some lemony flutter! I remember you posting her nails, they were great. ❤ I might post my Mum's nails more often, the response as just been so lovely. I was really worried about this post to be honest because I know what people can be like about nails and it would have really upset me. I don't mind so much if people criticise my nails because hey, I am representing myself as someone with some knowledge about what I am doing. Mum's nails are off limits though!

Hope you're well, look forward to catching up with your blog soon ❤

Oh, you’re so right, mummy’s nails or a friend’s nails? Off limits.

Duck feet nails? I feel the EXACT same way.
